Same day as Easter
We have a full day of food holidays tomorrow
- For your breakfast you may celebrate 'National Raisin Spice Bar Day'.
[The Hankster says] A nice light meal. You will want to save room for later.
- For lunch, how about giving in to 'Deep Dish Pizza Day'.
[The Hankster says] that's for me. I love the bread almost as much as the toppings.
- For supper (dinner for those who call it such), your main course will be a nod to an Easter tradition, ''National Baked Ham with Pineapple Day'. Falls on the same day as Easter.
- And if you have cleaned your plate you may indulge in 'National Caramel Day'.
[The Hankster says] If you have any spice bars left over from breakfast (I know, but it's possible), cover them with caramel.
Tomorrow is 'National Go For Broke Day'.
[The Hankster says
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the US Army received the Presidential Unit Citation for outstanding accomplishments in combat in the vicinity of Serravezza, Carrara, and Fosdinovo, Italy, from April 5 to April 14, 1945.] The unit was made up of
almost entirely American soldiers of Japanese ancestry. They fought despite the fact that many of their families were subject to internment.
From Wikipedia: 'The 442nd Regiment was the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of American warfare. The 4,000 men who initially came in April 1943 had to be replaced nearly 2.5 times. In total, about 14,000 men served, earning 9,486 Purple Hearts. The unit was awarded eight Presidential Unit Citations (5 earned in one month). Twenty-one of its members were awarded Medals of Honor. Its motto was
"Go for Broke". There is a 1951 Hollywood movie about the unit, with
the title 'Go For Broke'.
Put down that GPS. Tomorrow you have to do it the old way. Tomorrow is 'National
Read a Road Map Day'.
[The Hankster says] While you are trying to impress your kids with the good old days, and after you have referred to the 'View Master' as the visual leading edge of it's time, the six transistor radio as the nearest thing to a iPod as tech could get, you have given up trying to explain 8-Tracks and Cassette tapes, talked about the hours of fun you had sitting on the floor and building things with manual toys, and that a bicycle was your preferred mode of transportation, you can pull out
an old road map and
try to explain how it is used.
Awareness days tomorrow.
- 'Gold Star Wives Day'. Anniversary of the first meeting on April 5, 1945. It was formed before the end of World War II to provide support for the spouses and children of those who lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.
- 'National Dental Hygienists Week. In Canada.
Elvis Presley once said 'Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away.'
[The Hankster says] Perhaps not so elegantly said, but true, nonetheless. Time, as it passes is a very good arbitrator. As Willie S. once wrote 'Truth will out'. Mark Twain once said 'If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything'. Of course he wrote under a pseudonym. Who's truth, how much truth and how to state the facts without adding a little interpretation of your own, has always been truth's sore point. Let us see if April 5 in the past had nay truths, half-truths
or down right lies.
This is a look back on human history, so I bet we might find a little of each.
In 1792, First ever presidential 'veto' of a bill.

April is:
April origin (from Wikipedia):
'The Romans gave this month the Latin name Aprilis but the derivation of
this name is uncertain. The traditional etymology is from the verb aperire,
'to open', in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin
to 'open', which is supported by comparison with the modern Greek use of
(anoixis) (opening) for spring. Since some of the Roman months were named
in honor of divinities, and as April was sacred to the goddess Venus, her
Veneralia being held on the first day, it has been suggested that
April was the second month of the earliest Roman calendar, before
Ianuarius and Februarius were added by King Numa Pompilius about 700 BC.
It became the fourth month of the calendar year (the year when twelve
months are displayed in order) during the time of the decemvirs about
450 BC, when it also was given 29 days. The 30th day was added during
the reform of the calendar undertaken by Julius Caesar in the mid-40s BC,
which produced the Julian calendar.'
April
'is commonly associated with the season of spring in parts of the
Northern Hemisphere and autumn in parts of the Southern Hemisphere,
where it is the seasonal equivalent to October in the
Northern Hemisphere and vice versa.'
