The old imperial law offered heads of families a league and a labor of land, 4,605 acres (1,864 ha), and other inducements. It also provided for the employment of agents, called empresarios, to promote immigration. As an empresario, Austin was to receive 67,000 acres of land for each 200 families he brought to Texas. According to the law, immigrants were not required to pay fees to the government. Henry's Heads Up! - previous days social media post (updated daily)

Tomorrow's food holiday will be 'National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day'.
[The Hankster says] I mentioned these back on 'National Candy Day' as one of my favorites at the Christmas season. That hasn't changed.

Tomorrow is the 'Fruitcake Toss Day'.
[The Hankster says] I've mentioned several times as to what a waste this is. Why not use a cake simulation of uniform size and wait. And again I offer two alternatives, and re-gifting is not one of them. Take them to a food bank. Catapult and trebuchet enthusiasts can however, forward those to a receptacle in my back yard. Front door delivery has been suspended until the next holiday season. For those who got a drone for Christmas may still deliver fruitcakes to the landing platform, constructed at great cost, in my backyard. It can be recognized as an elevated metal tripod structure, with the word Weber on top.

Tomorrow is 'National Drinking Straw Day'.
[The Hankster says] On Jan 3 in 1888, Marvin C. Stone received a patent for the paper drinking straw.

A much needed day tomorrow. It will be 'Festival of Sleep Day'.
[The Hankster says] Who doesn't need a little rest and relaxation after the hectic holidays. It's like taking a vacation to recover from taking a vacation.

Tomorrow we celebrate an author's birthday on 'J.R.R. Tolkien Day'.
[The Hankster says] John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (January 3, 1892 – September 2, 1973) was an author most noted for 'The Hobbit' and sequel 'The Lord of the Rings'.

Tomorrow is a day that reminds us of our earthly mortality. It will be 'Memento Mori 'Remember You Die' Day'.
[The Hankster says] The term is Latin for 'Remember your mortality.' It can be traced back to the servant of a victorious Roman general, who reminded the general that all his glory could be meaningless to him, if he died the next day.

Tomorrow there will be a new number one song on the 'Cash Box Top 100'. It is ' I Feel Fine' by the Beatles. It knocked 'Come See About Me (The Supremes)' out of number one, but will be replaced on January 23 1965, when 'Downtown (Petula Clark)', takes over.

If you want to see the number one box office movie instead, that would still be 'My Fair Lady. It pushed out 'Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlott', and will be number one until the weekend box office ratings of January 31 1965, when '36 Hours', takes over.

Georgia O'Keeffe once said 'Nobody sees a flower really; it is so small. We haven't time, and to see takes time - like to have a friend takes time.'
[The Hankster says] What you do today will be the history of tomorrow. Take time today to really stop, look and listen. Why don't we stop and smell the flowers of the bygone day of January 3. I will do so, and I hope to take you, my friend with me on that journey.

In 1870, The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge begins. The bridge was completed May 24, 1883.

In 1823 - Stephen F. Austin receives a grant of land in Texas from the government of Mexico.

In 1938, The March of Dimes campaign to stomp out polio is organized.

In 1951, The TV show 'Dragnet' premiers.

In 1957, In Lancaster, PA, the first ever electric watch is introduced.

In 1959, Alaska becomes the 49th state of the U.S.

In 1962, Ground is broken for the Houston Astrodome. It opened on April 9 1965. Last NFL game December 21, 1996. Last Major League Baseball October 9, 1999. Last rodeo 2002. It cost $35 million, $262 million in today's dollars.

In 1987, Aretha Franklin becomes the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2004, After hosting the show for over 30 years, Casey Kasem gives up the hosting duties of 'American Top 40' to Ryan Seacrest.

January is:

January origin (from Wikipedia): 'January is named after Janus, the God of beginnings and transitions; the name has its beginnings in Roman mythology, coming from the Latin word for door since January is the door to the year.'

'January is the first month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of seven months with the length of 31 days. The first day of the month is known as New Year's Day. It is, on average, the coldest month of the year within most of the Northern Hemisphere (where it is the second month of winter) and the warmest month of the year within most of the Southern Hemisphere (where it is the second month of summer). In the Southern hemisphere, January is the seasonal equivalent of July in the Northern hemisphere and vice versa.'
