Pepper Pot Day: More
Tomorrow's food holiday will be 'Pepper Pot Day'.
[The Hankster says] The soup that save the war. The Revolutionary War, that is.
Christopher Ludwick, the baker general of the Continental Army came up with this soup recipe, out of necessity. It was made mostly of scrap meat, tripe and peppercorns. Farmers sold their best food to the British, for cash, not the unstable currency of Washington's Valley Forge army. It really did keep the troupes going during that winter of record cold.
Tomorrow we have two holidays that remind us that we are only two days from the end of the year.
First is 'Tick Tock Day'.
[The Hankster says] Yes, as we have mentioned so often on this post, time continues to run. You only have these few days left to finish the resolutions you made back on Jan. 1.
The second is 'National Get on the Scales Day'.
[The Hankster says] We might not mention this holiday too much, since, T.I.P.S. (Truth In Posting Stuff) requires me not to call the kettle, black. I am, however, investigating to see if there is some magnetic anomaly on the right side of my scales, that may be influencing the needle fluctuation in that direction.
Johann Kaspar Lavater once said 'Who makes quick use of the moment is a genius of prudence'.
[The Hankster says] We can make wise use of the now, which in turn will better provide for the future. Let us see if some heeded this advice on December 29 in the past.
In 1845, The U.S. annexes the Republic of Texas which had been independent since the Texas Revolution of 1836. Texas is admitted as the 28th U.S. state.
In 1851, The U.S. first YMCA opens in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1913, The first movie serial 'Adventures of Kathlyn', a silent movie 'cliff hanger', premieres.
[The Hankster says] I remember the 'cliff hanger' serials at the movie theater as a kid. By the 50's, we were mainly watching serials from the 30's and 40's. Flash Gordon, Radar Men From the Moon and Dick Tracy. Just about every cowboy super star was involved in an unmistakeable death trap, only to reappear next episode. I think every cowboy that rode off into the sunset, had to, at least once, run over a cliff. Or we might see our hero go over the cliff in a truck which burst into flame.
Next week we perceived that we had missed his jumping from the truck at the last minute. As a kid, I never could figure out how I missed those last minute, life saving feats. I can only think that my attention was concentrated on the kid behind me who was putting popcorn down my back at the time.
In 1957, Pat Boone earns his second #1 hit with 'April Love'.

December is:
December origin (from Wikipedia): '
December gets its name from the Latin word decem (meaning ten) because it was originally the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar, which began in March. The winter days following December were not included as part of any month. Later, the months of January and February were created out of the monthless period and added to the beginning of the calendar, but December retained its name.
