National Potato Day: More
Potato Day on Aug. 19
Tomorrow's food holiday will be 'National Potato Day'. No, that was simple 'Potato Day' on Aug. 19. Anything so versatile deserves more than one day.
While I have you confused, tomorrow is once again 'Navy Day'. This is the Navy Day that was created by the Navy League back in 1922 (Theodore Roosevelt's birthday is on the 27) and was absorbed into Arm forces Day in 1949 and celebrated in May. The Navy League was a private organization, and stayed with October 27. In the 1970's it was determined that the US Navy started on October 13 1775, as we stated a few days ago. Even though the Navy League agreed to this, October 27 is still considered by many as
the day to celebrate.
We have an awareness day tomorrow. 'Lock Your Meds Day'. 'A day to make adults aware of the fact that they are often the unintentional supplier of prescription medications being abused by kids.'
We have a UN recognition day tomorrow. It is 'World Day for Audiovisual Heritage'. We have all heard of the films that were lost due to poor storage and the volatile media itself. Your old Kodachrome pictures have most likely faded to the point that you wish they were black and white. Even the 40 to 100 years promised by the manufactures of CD's and DVD's can really be as low as 2 years. The Library of Congress is currently having to contend with this problem. It might be time to re-copy your media to
protect yourselves as the UN occupies itself with the worlds needs.
Louis Hector Berlioz once said 'Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.' Ah, but, those who have come and gone, have something to tell us, if we will listen. So, perk-up your ears and let us hear what October 27 has to say from the past.
In 1829, the first patent for a baby carriage was issued. That is a perambulator or pram to my extreme over East (GR) and way, way down south (AU) friends.
In 1904, The world's first subway, the Interborough Rapid Transit, opens in NYC.
In 1916, The first published reference to the term 'Jazz' appears in print.
In 1925, Water skis, are patented by Fred Waller. They existed in some form prior, but no one took out a patent.
In 1947, The radio show, 'You Bet Your Life' with Groucho Marx premieres. The TV version premiered on October 4 1950. The format of the show was simple and allowed it to be broadcast on TV and radio at the same time. Most of the shows are in the public domain and can be found all over the Internet.
