National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day: More
Drag out the autumn recipes. I'll start with tomorrow's food holiday 'National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day'. I don't think I have ever had it, but sounds good. I believe it will be 'Apple Day' in the UK tomorrow. Wonder what an apple cheesecake would taste like. In both cases, I think the spices would make the dessert.
If you think tomorrow will be a boring day, think twice. It will be twice as boring, with tomorrow's major event being 'Count Your Buttons Day'. I prefer thumb twiddling to button counting. And, no, I couldn't find a Guinness record for either.
We have an animal awareness day tomorrow. It will be 'National Reptile Awareness Day'. So, let's go out and hug a big snake. Or, is it the big snakes that hugs us?
We have a health related awareness day, tomorrow 'Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) Prevention Day'. 'Iodine deficiency is one of the main cause of impaired cognitive development in children.' Easily and economically adding iodine (a micro nutriment) to the diet is why you see the word 'Iodized' on that blue cardboard salt package.
Drew Sirtors once said 'Watches are so named as a reminder — if you don't watch carefully what you do with your time, it will slip away from you. ' We have the now, and I hope some future. The now passes too quickly and the future is 'not ours to see', so let's be content with gleaning from the past. Maybe October 21.
In 1824, Joseph Aspdin patents Portland cement. This was a huge breakthrough for construction, from the old 'Roman' type cement. And the inventor and the word Portland comes from England, not Oregon.
In 1854, Florence Nightingale and a staff of 38 nurses are sent to the Crimean War. Her work there, id not end, as she developed a nursing school in England. There is also a holiday 'National Nurses Day' celebrating her birthday.
Original 'Florence Nightingale Pledge' taken by her nurses.
'I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life in purity and to practise my profession faithfully.
I shall abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and shall not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.
I shall do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.
I shall be loyal to my work and devoted towards the welfare of those committed to my care.' There was a revision in 1935.'
In 1892 - World's Columbian Exposition (or, Chicago World's Fair) opens in Chicago.
